SPRINGFIELD - With misfortune can come opportunity, and the Springfield Falcons seized it Friday night.

They overcame the absence of leading scorer Chris Minard with five goals in the first 27 minutes, kick-starting a rousing 5-2 triumph over Bridgeport at the MassMutual Center.

"We really miss Chris. Any team would, but we moved the puck around well, and that comes with confidence," Falcons coach Rob Daum said.

"To be able to get five goals without him, that's encouraging."

Springfield moved above the .500 mark (6-5-2-1). Perhaps more significant was the message that this team need not be a one-man band.

"We've been sitting at .500. We're a better team that that," said Chad Wiseman, who scored two goals.

Every American Hockey team loses players to injury or call-ups. The Falcons of recent years have not shown the depth to adjust, but this team looks different.

Liam Reddox and Colton Fretter connected on the power play, where Springfield had been relying heavily on Minard.

Colin McDonald also scored for the Falcons, who won before a crowd of 3,302.

    They are 4-0-1-1 at home.
