Rotary Club presents Paul Harris awards
SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield Rotary Club honored five recipients at its 95th anniversary Paul Harris Awards banquet on Oct. 1 at Chez Josef in Agawam.
The 2009 recipients are David L. Dambrov, of Longmeadow; Dr. MaryAnne Herron, of Springfield; Jay L. Lieb, also of Longmeadow; Marion B. Russell, of Longmeadow; and the Irene E. & George A. Davis Foundation.
A Paul Harris recognition is the highest honor a Rotary Club may bestow on an individual or group who may or may not be a Rotarian. It is awarded in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given and exemplifies the Rotary International Motto "Service Above Self."
In celebration of the Springfield Rotary's 95th anniversary, a silent auction was held to raise funds to support Mercy Hospital's welcome baby basket program and the Shriners Hospital for Children. The baby basket effort is a pilot program developed to celebrate the birth of babies in Springfield. Shriners Hospital for Children in Springfield, has been providing specialty care for children at no cost to the families for more than 84 years.
In accepting the award for the Davis Foundation, Stephen A. Davis said, "We really try to focus on areas we think are critical in the community. It really starts with young children. If we have successful young children, they grow up to be successful members of the community."
The Springfield Rotary Club has presented more than 155 Paul Harris Fellowship awards throughout the years. Each award represents a gift of at least $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation. A recent Rotary Foundation project has been "Polio Plus" - helping to create programs throughout the world to eradicate polio.
The club meets every Friday at 12:15 p.m. in the Mass Mutual Room at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The luncheon is $17 and is open to the public.
